Verse & Lens

A different lens on Scripture.

Verse & Lens seeks to produce study resources that start from what you already know.

About

A verse sometimes takes a different lens to really see what is going on inside it. People come to the Bible with their own culture and their own assumptions, and the work is not to strip that away. It is to hand them something that lets them see what the authors were bringing to it. God brought his truth to light through Jewish authors, and Jewish authors write in a specific way that is not how the 21st-century Western world writes.

Most study material opens at chapter one. Read the introduction, read chapter one, answer the questions about chapter one. Verse & Lens seeks to first bring you something you already know and enjoy, because the connection is what makes the text land.

It is working when you can describe what a series is for, when you want to dig further, and when you can hand it to someone else.

The Gospel as a Story

The Gospel as a Story is the first Verse & Lens series. It teaches how a story works before it teaches the gospel.

Everything but the printed book is free.

The book is written. The free PDF, the videos and the articles are being made now.

The author

I'm Lee Pettijohn. I build operational systems for small businesses, and I write Verse & Lens in the time that leaves.

This exists because I spent years saying things about Scripture that I could recite and could not explain. The words were supposed to do something. I said them and waited. What finally worked was not a better definition — it was coming at the text from something I already understood.

It is not named after me because it is not about me, and because someone else should be able to bring a series here one day.
